Travel through mountain passes, heritage villages and archaeological landscapes as you uncover stories that stretch back thousands of years. From the ancient Diepkloof Rock Shelter to the artists and storytellers of Redelinghuys, this is a journey into the people, places and traditions that have shaped the land.

A Three-Day Journey into Ancient Landscapes, Living Culture and the Stories of the Sandveld

Day 1: Where the Story Begins

Begin your journey with an early morning guided visit to the Diepkloof Rock Shelter, one of the region’s most significant archaeological sites. Walk with a local guide and hear stories of the San people who once lived in this landscape. Discover ancient rock art, dramatic rock formations and traces of human life that reach back thousands of years.

Set within the vast Sandveld and on the edge of the majestic Cederberg Mountains, the landscape is part of the experience. Slow down, look closely and imagine the generations of people who walked these paths before you.

After your morning exploration, enjoy a well-earned lunch at the nearby Rooistoor Farmstall. Surrounded by the landscape of the Verlorenvlei, this is a wonderful place to enjoy the slower rhythms of the Sandveld and watch for the many bird species that inhabit the area.

One of the Western Cape’s most important wetland ecosystems, Verlorenvlei is a sanctuary for birds, photographers and nature lovers. It was declared a RAMSAR site in …

Explore reedbeds, estuary channels and open water habitats while searching for flamingos, pelicans, raptors and migratory species.

Continue to the small village of Redelinghuys for the night. As darkness falls and the lights grow quiet, look up. The clear rural skies make stargazing one of the unexpected pleasures of staying here.

Day 2: Into the Wild

Wake up slowly and enjoy a hearty breakfast in Redelinghuys, taking time to mingle with the locals and experience the warmth of small-town life.

Later, travel to nearby Goudkop Bush Camp for a game drive through the Sandveld landscape.

Keep your camera ready as you search for eland, kudu, springbok, gemsbok, zebra and other wildlife roaming in their natural surroundings. The experience offers beautiful photographic opportunities and another perspective on the landscapes that have sustained people and wildlife for generations.

Return to Redelinghuys and enjoy another peaceful evening beneath the stars.

Day 3: Meet the Artists of Redelinghuys

But this is not simply a farm visit. It is an invitation to think differently about how we live.

Discover the farm’s recycling and composting practices, learn about its approach to reducing waste and try your hand at practical regenerative living. Even the bathroom tells a story: experience an eco-friendly dry toilet where sawdust is used instead of water.

If your visit falls on the last Saturday of the month, experience the much-loved Piket-Bo-Berg Farmers Market, where local producers, growers and makers gather to share the flavours and creativity of the mountain community.

As evening falls, gather around the fire for a traditional South African braai.

Eat slowly. Share stories. Look up.

Far from the lights of the city, the mountain skies offer spectacular stargazing.

Overnight on the farm or choose a more luxurious nearby stay at Retreat Guest Farm.

For lunch, stop at Kardoesie, a much-loved country farm stall filled with local flavours. Take your time browsing the shelves and be sure to try the locally made biltong.

Continue your Green Road journey, stopping whenever the landscape, a farm stall or a roadside discovery invites you to slow down.

Day 3: Coffee, Local Stories and Old Piketberg

Take your final morning slowly. Enjoy a relaxed late breakfast at The Crazy Cat in the centre of Piketberg before meeting one of the town’s local makers.

By prior appointment, visit Eric, the man behind Berg Coffee. Eric roasts his own coffee using beans sourced from across Africa. Taste freshly roasted coffee while hearing the story of how his curiosity about real coffee grew into a local roastery.

Stay a little longer. Listen to the stories. Discover Piketberg through the eyes of someone who calls it home.

Before leaving town, visit the Piketberg Museum and explore the Historic Route. Walk among old buildings and discover another layer of the town’s story before beginning your journey home.
